Discipleship in Small Churches
How to disciple new believers and develop mature Christians in a small church. Practical guidance for pastors and lay leaders.
What Discipleship Is
Discipleship is the process of helping someone grow from new believer to mature Christian who can disciple others. It is not a program — it is a relationship. The most effective discipleship in a small church happens one-on-one or in small groups of 2-4 people.
How to Disciple a New Christian
In the First 24 Hours
When someone responds to the gospel, the first 24 hours matter. Do not treat a decision as a finish line — treat it as a starting line.
- Thank them for trusting you with this conversation
- Write down what they said and what questions they asked
- Pray for them by name
- Agree on whether and when to talk again
In the First Week
- Offer one short Scripture reading — something simple like John 3 or Romans 8
- Help them meet a pastor or mature believer who can walk with them
- Make space for questions about Jesus, baptism, church, family, and doubt
- Do not pressure them — let the Holy Spirit do the work
In the First Month
- Invite them to church and introduce them to people
- Start a simple Bible reading plan together
- Pray together regularly
- Answer questions honestly — it is okay to say “I don’t know, let’s find out together”
A Simple Discipleship Framework
The most effective discipleship follows a simple pattern:
- Model — “I do it, you watch”
- Mentor — “I do it, you help”
- Monitor — “You do it, I help”
- Multiply — “You do it, someone else watches”
This pattern works for any ministry skill: sharing the gospel, leading a Bible study, praying with someone, or serving in the community.
