Baptism as a Public Declaration

Baptism is a public declaration of faith — a visible sign of an inward reality. When someone is baptized, they are publicly identifying with Jesus Christ, his death, and his resurrection. For a small church, baptism is one of the most significant and joyful events in the life of the congregation.

Preparing Someone for Baptism

Before baptizing someone, the pastor should meet with them to confirm:

• They have genuinely trusted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior
• They understand what baptism means and why they are being baptized
• They are ready to make a public declaration of their faith

A simple pre-baptism conversation of 30-60 minutes is sufficient for most candidates. Some churches use a brief baptism class.

Baptism Logistics for Small Churches

Location Options

• Baptismal tank — if your church has one, use it
• Partner church — borrow a baptismal tank from a nearby church
• Natural water — a river, lake, or pond can be a meaningful setting
• Swimming pool — a member’s pool or a community pool works well

Making It a Celebration

Baptism should be a celebration for the whole congregation. Ideas:

• Invite the person’s family and friends
• Have the person share their testimony before being baptized
• Pray over them as a congregation
• Celebrate afterward with a meal or reception
