What to Look for in Free Youth Group Curriculum

Not all free curriculum is worth using. Before you download anything, check for these four things:

1. Theological soundness

Free curriculum is only valuable if it teaches the right things. Check: Does it present the gospel clearly? Does it treat Scripture as authoritative? Does it avoid moralism (teaching good behavior without grounding it in the gospel)? A theologically thin curriculum that is easy to use is worse than no curriculum at all.

2. Minimal preparation time

If you are a volunteer youth leader, you have 30-60 minutes to prepare. Curriculum that requires two hours of prep will not get used. Look for curriculum with a clear structure, a leader guide that tells you what to say, and discussion questions that are ready to use.

3. Works for mixed ages and small numbers

Most curriculum assumes age-separated groups of 15-30 students. Small church youth groups often have 3-12 students across multiple grade levels. Look for curriculum that works for mixed ages and does not require a large group to be effective.

4. Honest about the small church context

Curriculum that assumes a stage, a band, and a production team is not designed for you. Look for curriculum that acknowledges the small church reality and is designed for it, not adapted from a large church model.

Dare2Share offers free curriculum focused on evangelism training for teenagers. Their Life in 6 Words (G.O.S.P.E.L.) curriculum is free to download and works well for small groups. Strong on evangelism, lighter on discipleship depth.

The Gospel Project (Lifeway)

Lifeway offers free sample lessons from The Gospel Project. The full curriculum is paid, but the samples give you a sense of the quality. Chronological, gospel-centered, and theologically solid. Works well for small groups.

Igniting Light Ministries (ignitinglightministries.com)

Free weekly lesson plans specifically designed for youth pastors and group leaders. Scripture-rooted, minimal prep, and designed for small groups. Worth checking out as a supplement to your own curriculum.

Your Denomination’s Resources

Most denominations offer free or low-cost curriculum for youth ministry. Check your denomination’s website before purchasing anything. Nazarene, Brethren in Christ, Church of God, and many others have free resources available to member churches.

How to Build Your Own Free Curriculum

The most sustainable approach for a small church is to build your own curriculum using free resources as building blocks:

1. Choose a theme or book of the Bible for the next 4-8 weeks
2. Use the lesson plan template as your structure
3. Pull discussion questions from the 50 discussion questions
4. Add an icebreaker from the 50 icebreakers
5. Use an object lesson from the 20 object lessons to open the lesson

This approach takes 30-45 minutes of preparation and produces a lesson that is genuinely yours , not a script you are reading from someone else’s curriculum.
