How to Thank Your Volunteers When You Have No Budget
Your volunteers do not serve for recognition. But everyone likes to be appreciated. Here are 12 ways to thank your volunteers that cost nothing.
The Free List
1. Say It Out Loud
A specific thank you, spoken publicly during a service, means more than any gift. Not “thanks to all our volunteers” but “Sarah, the way you welcomed the new family on Tuesday encouraged all of us.”
3. Write a Note
A handwritten note. Not an email. Not a text. A physical piece of paper that says “I noticed what you did, and it mattered.”
4. Pray for Them by Name
During public prayer, mention your volunteers by name. “Lord, we thank you for David, who spent Saturday morning cleaning the church so we could worship in a welcoming space.”
5. Give Them a Sunday Off
If your nursery worker serves every Sunday for a year without a break, give them a month off. Rotate someone else in. Your volunteers are not machines.
6. Remember Their Life
When their child graduates. When their parent dies. When they lose their job. Show up. Send a card. Make a phone call.
7. Ask Their Opinion
Invite a volunteer into a decision. “You know our people better than anyone. What do you think we should do?” This communicates trust.
8. Feed Them
A potluck after church. A meal delivered to their home. You do not need a budget for a sandwich and a bag of chips.
9. Encourage Their Development
Pay for them to attend a conference. Buy them a book. Invest in their growth.
10. Tell Their Story
In your newsletter, tell the story of what one volunteer did. Not with a LinkedIn-style testimonial, but a genuine narrative. “Last month, when the flooding hit, Jim organized the cleanup crew.”
11. Celebrate Anniversaries
When a volunteer hits a milestone (1 year, 5 years, 10 years of service), mark it. A certificate costs a few dollars. A speech costs nothing.
12. Just Listen
Sometimes the best recognition is “How are you doing? Really?” Sit down, make eye contact, and listen.
