30 Days of Prayer for Our Pastor Search: A Guide for the Whole Congregation

A pastoral transition is one of the most significant seasons a church will walk through. It can be a time of anxiety and uncertainty. It can also be a time of deep prayer, renewed dependence on God, and genuine spiritual growth.

This guide is for the whole congregation — not just the search committee. Every member of the church has a role to play in calling the next pastor: the role of prayer. The search committee does the work of the search. The congregation does the work of prayer. Both matter.

How the Guide Is Organized

Week 1: Praying for Our Church (Days 1-7)

Gratitude for history, honesty about needs, unity in the congregation, wisdom for leadership, the search committee, community witness, and rest in God’s sovereignty.

Week 2: Praying for Our Future Pastor (Days 8-14)

The pastor God is preparing, the pastor’s family, clarity of calling, character and integrity, preaching and teaching, a shepherd’s heart, and leadership and vision.

Week 3: Praying Through the Search Process (Days 15-21)

The search process, discernment in interviews, protection from deception, reference checks, the candidating weekend, the congregational vote, and God’s timing.

Week 4: Praying Through the Call and Beyond (Days 22-30)

The call and acceptance, compensation and provision, the transition and move, the first Sunday, the congregation’s reception, the pastor’s first year, the previous pastor, long-term fruitfulness, and thanksgiving.

How to Use It

• Individually — Read the day’s entry in the morning, pray through the focus, return briefly in the evening
• As a family — Read together at a meal or before bed, let children pray in their own words
• In small groups — Open each meeting with the day’s prayer focus
• As a congregation — Include the week’s focus in the bulletin, open board meetings with the day’s entry

A church that prays through a pastoral transition is a church that arrives at the other side stronger.
