Church Visitor Follow-Up Phone Call Script
Free word-for-word script for your first contact within 36 hours. Plus email and letter templates.
The 36-Hour Rule
Research consistently shows that contact within 36 hours of a first visit dramatically increases the likelihood of a return visit. After 72 hours, the window closes significantly. Use this script within 36 hours — not 72, not a week later.
The Phone Call Script (Word-for-Word)
Use this script as a guide, not a reading. Speak naturally. The goal is warmth, not recruitment.
OPENING
“Hi, is this [Name]? This is [Your Name] from [Church Name]. I’m calling because you visited us this past Sunday, and I just wanted to say thank you for coming.”
IF THEY ANSWER WARMLY
“We really enjoyed having you. I hope you felt welcome. Is there anything I can answer for you about our church, or anything we can pray for you about?”
IF THEY SEEM HESITANT
“I just wanted to make a quick call — no pressure at all. We’re glad you came, and you’re welcome back anytime. Is there anything I can help you with?”
CLOSING
“Well, I won’t keep you. We’d love to see you again. Have a great week.”
IF NO ANSWER — VOICEMAIL
“Hi [Name], this is [Your Name] from [Church Name]. You visited us this past Sunday, and I just wanted to call and say thank you. We really enjoyed having you. You’re welcome back anytime. Have a great week. Bye.”
Week-Two Follow-Up: Pastoral Note
If they return, great. If not, send a handwritten note or email in week two. Keep it brief.
WEEK-TWO EMAIL OR NOTE
“Dear [Name], I wanted to follow up from your visit to [Church Name] a couple of weeks ago. We enjoyed having you, and I hope you felt welcome. If you have any questions about our church or if there’s anything I can pray for you about, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You’re always welcome here. — [Pastor Name]”
Month-One Check-In
If they haven’t returned after a month, one final personal outreach is appropriate. After this, respect their decision.
MONTH-ONE CALL OR TEXT
“Hi [Name], this is [Your Name] from [Church Name]. I just wanted to check in and let you know you’re still welcome anytime. No pressure — just wanted you to know the door is open. Hope you’re doing well.”
What Not to Do
- Don’t ask for personal information — name, address, email. Let them offer it.
- Don’t pressure them to return — warmth, not recruitment.
- Don’t call more than three times — after three contacts with no response, respect their decision.
- Don’t use a script that sounds like a script — practice until it sounds natural.
