What Is a Church Membership Covenant?
A church membership covenant is a written commitment that members make to each other and to the church. It describes what it means to belong to this community: how members will worship, give, serve, and relate to each other. It is not a legal contract — it is a description of the life you are committing to together.
Why Every Small Church Needs One
A membership covenant does three things:
- It sets clear expectations. Members know what they are committing to before they join.
- It provides a framework for accountability. When a member is struggling or drifting, the covenant gives the pastor and elders a basis for pastoral care.
- It protects the church’s culture. A covenant helps the church maintain its identity and values as it grows and changes.
What a Church Membership Covenant Should Include
- Worship attendance — a commitment to gather regularly with the congregation
- Financial giving — a commitment to give generously and consistently
- Service — a commitment to use your gifts in ministry
- Reconciliation — a commitment to pursue reconciliation when conflict arises, following Matthew 18
- Submission to leadership — a commitment to respect and support the church’s leadership
- Support of the mission — a commitment to support the church’s evangelism and outreach
Sample Church Membership Covenant
[CHURCH NAME] Membership Covenant
Having received Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, and having been baptized as a public declaration of my faith, I now feel called by God to unite with [CHURCH NAME]. In doing so, I commit myself to God and to the other members of this church to do the following:
- I will worship God faithfully by attending the services of this church regularly, unless providentially hindered.
- I will support the ministry of this church through my prayers, my presence, my gifts, and my service.
- I will give generously and consistently to support the work of this church and its missions.
- I will seek to live a life worthy of the gospel, pursuing holiness and avoiding sin.
- I will pursue reconciliation with any member of this church with whom I have a conflict, following the principles of Matthew 18:15-17.
- I will submit to the spiritual leadership of this church and support its pastors and elders.
- I will seek to share the gospel with those who do not know Jesus Christ.
- When I leave this church, I will do so in a manner that honors God and this congregation.
