Practical resources for small church youth leaders.

By Brent Lacy

Series 1: Who Am I? (4 Weeks , Identity)

This series addresses the most fundamental question teenagers face. It is the foundation for everything else.

  1. Made on Purpose , Psalm 139:13-16. God formed you intentionally. Your existence is not an accident.
  2. Chosen, Not Earned , Ephesians 1:4-5. You are chosen by God before you did anything to deserve it.
  3. New Creation , 2 Corinthians 5:17. In Christ, you are not a reformed version of your old self. You are genuinely new.
  4. Enough , Philippians 4:11-13. Contentment is not a feeling. It is a learned discipline rooted in who God says you are.

Series 2: Hard Questions (5 Weeks , Apologetics)

This series gives teenagers permission to ask the questions they have been afraid to ask and honest answers to engage with.

  1. Is the Bible Actually True? , 2 Timothy 3:16-17. The manuscript evidence for the New Testament.
  2. Did Jesus Really Rise from the Dead? , 1 Corinthians 15:3-8. The historical case for the resurrection.
  3. Why Does God Allow Suffering? , Romans 8:18-28. God does not promise to explain suffering. He promises to be present in it.
  4. Is Christianity the Only Way? , John 14:6. What Jesus actually claimed and what it means.
  5. What About People Who Never Heard? , Romans 1:18-20, Romans 2:14-15. An honest engagement with a hard question.

Series 3: Real Life (4 Weeks , Practical Ethics)

This series connects the Bible to the specific situations teenagers face every day.

  1. Social Media and Your Soul , Philippians 4:8. What you consume shapes who you become.
  2. Money and Enough , 1 Timothy 6:6-10. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. What does that mean for a teenager?
  3. Sex and God’s Design , 1 Corinthians 6:18-20. God’s design for sex is not a restriction. It is a protection.
  4. Friendship and Influence , Proverbs 13:20. You become like the people you spend the most time with.

Series 4: The Life of Faith (4 Weeks , Spiritual Disciplines)

This series teaches teenagers the practices that sustain faith over a lifetime.

  1. How to Read the Bible , Psalm 119:105. Reading the Bible is a skill. Most people were never taught how.
  2. How to Pray , Matthew 6:9-13. Prayer is a conversation, not a performance.
  3. Why Community Matters , Hebrews 10:24-25. You cannot follow Jesus alone. You were not designed to.
  4. Serving Without Burning Out , Mark 10:42-45. Jesus defines greatness as service. But service without rest produces burnout.

Series 5: Relationships (4 Weeks)

This series addresses the relational questions teenagers are navigating every day.

  1. What Makes a Good Friend? , Proverbs 17:17, John 15:13. Friendship that costs something is the only kind worth having.
  2. How to Handle Conflict , Matthew 18:15-17. Go directly to the person. Most people do the opposite.
  3. Dating and Relationships , 2 Corinthians 6:14, Song of Solomon 2:7. What the Bible actually says about romantic relationships.
  4. Forgiving People Who Hurt You , Matthew 18:21-35. Forgiveness is not a feeling. It is a decision.

Series 6: The Gospel (3 Weeks)

This series ensures every student in your group has heard and understood the gospel clearly.

  1. The Problem , Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23. Sin is not just bad behavior. It is separation from God.
  2. The Solution , John 3:16, Romans 5:8. God did not wait for us to fix ourselves. He came for us.
  3. The Response , Romans 10:9-10, Acts 3:19. Trusting Jesus is not a one-time prayer. It is a direction you choose every day.

Series 7: Emotions and Mental Health (4 Weeks)

This series addresses the emotional and mental health challenges teenagers face with both biblical honesty and pastoral care.

  1. When God Feels Far Away , Psalm 22, Psalm 88. Spiritual dryness is normal. The Psalms model honest engagement with it.
  2. Anxiety and the Peace That Passes Understanding , Philippians 4:6-7. Anxiety is not a sin. It is a signal.
  3. Depression and the God Who Sees , 1 Kings 19:1-18. Elijah’s depression and God’s response: food, rest, and gentle presence.
  4. Grief and the God Who Weeps , John 11:35, 1 Thessalonians 4:13. Jesus wept. Christians grieve, but not as those without hope.

Series 8: Following Jesus (3 Weeks)

This series addresses what it actually means to be a disciple, not just a church attender.

  1. The Cost of Following , Luke 9:23-24. Following Jesus always costs something. The question is whether it is worth it.
  2. The Mission of Following , Matthew 28:18-20. The Great Commission is not optional. It is the mission.
  3. The Joy of Following , John 15:11. Jesus says his joy will be in you and your joy will be complete. What does that look like?
How to choose a series for your group.
Start with the questions your students are actually asking. If your group is struggling with identity, start with Series 1. If they are asking hard questions about faith, start with Series 2. If they are navigating difficult relationships, start with Series 5. The best series is the one that meets your students where they are.
