The Red Sea

Scripture: Exodus 14:1-31

Theme: God makes a way where there is no way

Age Group: Jr High (Ages 12-14)

Overview

The Israelites were trapped. The Egyptian army was behind them. The Red Sea was in front of them. There was no escape route, no backup plan, no Plan B. From a human perspective, the situation was completely hopeless.

But God had a plan that no one saw coming. He parted the sea, led His people through on dry ground, and destroyed the enemy that followed. The Red Sea story is about what happens when God shows up in an impossible situation.

Key Verse

“Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.” — Exodus 14:13a (NIV)

The Details

Read Exodus 14:1-31. Here is what happened:

  • God told Moses to turn back and camp by the sea. Pharaoh would think they were confused and trapped.
  • Pharaoh’s army caught up with them at the camp. Six hundred chariots plus the rest of the army.
  • The Israelites were terrified and complained to Moses. “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?”
  • Moses told them not to be afraid. “The Lord will fight for you.”
  • God told Moses to raise his staff over the sea. A strong east wind blew all night and dried up the sea floor.
  • The Israelites walked through on dry ground. The Egyptians followed. The wheels of their chariots got stuck. Moses raised his hand. The water returned. The army was destroyed.

Three Things to Notice

1. God allowed the situation on purpose. This was not a mistake or a detour. God led them there. He wanted Pharaoh to see what happens when you fight against the living God.

2. Fear is natural, but faith is a choice. The Israelites were afraid. That is understandable. But Moses called them to make a decision: stand firm or panic. Those are the two options every time we face something impossible.

3. God’s deliverance was total. He did not just get them away from the army. He removed the army entirely. God does not do partial rescues.

For Junior Highers

You are old enough to know that life is not always fair. You have probably already faced something that felt impossible. School bullies, family problems, health issues, grief. This story is for you. Not because God will part an actual sea for you, but because the God who parted that sea is the same God who is with you today.

Discussion

  • What “Red Sea” situations do you see in your life or the lives of people around you?
  • Why is standing firm harder than panicking?
  • How have you seen God make a way when there was no way?

Prayer

Ask God to help you trust Him in your impossible situations. Name them out loud if you are comfortable.
