The Red Sea

Scripture: Exodus 14:1-31

Theme: God makes a way where there is no way

Age Group: 4th-6th Grade (Ages 9-11)

Overview

The Red Sea crossing is one of the most dramatic moments in the Old Testament. The Israelites were trapped between the most powerful army in the ancient world and an impassable body of water. From every human perspective, they were finished. But God had other plans.

This lesson moves beyond the basic story to explore the theology of divine intervention, the nature of faith under pressure, and what it means to trust God when circumstances look hopeless.

Key Verse

“Moses answered the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.'” — Exodus 14:13-14 (NIV)

Lesson Goals

  • Understand the historical and theological significance of the Red Sea crossing
  • Identify the human tendency to panic and complain in crisis
  • Explore what it means to “stand firm” in faith during impossible circumstances
  • Connect the Red Sea deliverance to the believer’s experience of salvation

Context Setting (5 minutes)

Review where the Israelites are in the larger Exodus story. They have been slaves in Egypt for 400 years. God sent ten plagues. Pharaoh finally let them go. Now he has changed his mind. The Israelites are camped by the Red Sea with the Egyptian army approaching fast.

Deep Dive: What Made This Situation Impossible

Three factors made the Israelites’ situation hopeless:

  • Military reality: They were unarmed former slaves facing the most powerful military on earth.
  • Geographic reality: The Red Sea blocked any forward escape. They did not have boats or time to build them.
  • Human reality: They were terrified, angry, and turning on Moses. Fear and panic were contagious.

Ask: “When has a situation in your life felt this impossible?”

Bible Study: Exodus 14:1-31

Read the passage together, pausing at key moments:

  • Verses 1-4: God intentionally leads them into a position that looks like a trap. Why? So that His glory will be displayed.
  • Verses 5-10: Pharaoh thinks the Israelites are trapped. So do the Israelites. They both have incomplete information.
  • Verses 11-14: The people complain. Moses gives one of the great faith statements in Scripture.
  • Verses 15-22: God’s instructions seem strange (lift your staff), but they work. The east wind blows all night.
  • Verses 23-31: The army tries to follow. God protects the Israelites. The army is destroyed.

Discussion Questions

  • Why did God lead the Israelites to a place that looked like a dead end?
  • Moses told them to “stand firm” and “be still.” Is that easy? What does that actually look like?
  • How is the Red Sea crossing like what Jesus did for us? (Paul makes this connection in 1 Corinthians 10:1-2)
  • What “Red Sea” are you facing right now? How might God be leading you through it?

Application Activity

Have each student write down one “impossible situation” in their life or family. Collect them (anonymous). Read a few aloud and discuss: What would it look like to “stand firm” in this situation?

Closing Prayer

Pray specifically for the “Red Sea” situations in the class. Ask God for the faith to stand firm.
