Opening Hook: The “Best Choice” Challenge!

Imagine you’ve just won a special contest, and you get to ask for ONE thing – anything at all! What would you choose?

  • Would you ask for unlimited video games?
  • A lifetime supply of your favorite candy?
  • To be the best at sports or school?
  • To have a million dollars?
  • Or something else entirely?

Let’s go around and share what one thing you’d ask for and why. (Allow a few minutes for sharing and discussion). Keep your answer in mind as we hear what Solomon asked for when God gave him this exact opportunity!

Bible Story: Solomon Asks for Wisdom (1 Kings 3:1-28)

After his father King David passed away, young Solomon became the new king of Israel. It was a massive job, and Solomon felt very young and inexperienced. One night, God appeared to Solomon in a dream and said something incredible: “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Can you imagine?! God Himself was offering Solomon anything!

Solomon could have asked for a long life, incredible riches, or to defeat all his enemies. But do you know what he asked for? Solomon said, “Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.”

God was SO pleased with Solomon’s answer! He didn’t ask for selfish things. Instead, he asked for wisdom to lead God’s people well and to tell the difference between good and evil. Because Solomon honored God first and asked for something that would help others, God not only gave him incredible wisdom, but also gave him riches, honor, and a long life too!

Soon after, Solomon got a chance to use his new wisdom
