Jesus in the Temple, God With Us
When Jesus was twelve years old, He traveled with His parents, Joseph and Mary, to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration. This was a special yearly trip for Jewish families. But on the way home, Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem without His parents knowing. Mary and Joseph searched for Him for three days. When they finally found Him, He was sitting in the temple courts among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard Him was amazed at His understanding and His answers.
Jesus didn’t just listen quietly. He asked thoughtful questions and gave wise answers. The Bible says all who heard Him were astonished. When Mary and Joseph saw Him, they were overwhelmed. Mary said, ‘Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.’ Jesus replied, ‘Why were you searching for me? Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?’ (Luke 2:48-49). Even at twelve, Jesus understood who He was, God’s Son, and that His life had a special purpose.
After finding Jesus in the temple, Mary and Joseph did not fully understand what He meant. But Jesus went back to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. Mary treasured all these things in her heart. Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. This story shows us that God wants us to be like Jesus, always listening to Him, learning from Him, and doing what is right, no matter how young we are.
