It follows God’s rescue of Israel, the call to hear and love the one LORD, everyday teaching, the warning not to forget him, and the chapter’s answer to a child’s question. The child memory is explicitly labeled as a paraphrase of Deuteronomy 6:4–5. Jesus’ later teaching in Mark 12:28–34 and the gospel are separately identified. Children’s honest questions are welcomed; no child has to report private family practices or earn salvation through perfect obedience.
