Scripture: Genesis 6:9-9:17
Theme: God judges sin but saves those who trust Him
Age Group: High School (10th-12th Grade)
Lesson Overview
The flood narrative is one of the most theologically dense passages in the Old Testament. It presents the problem of human depravity: ‘every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time’ (Genesis 6:5). This is the doctrine of total depravity. Yet ‘Noah found favor’ (Genesis 6:8) — grace preceding obedience. Noah’s salvation was by grace through faith (Hebrews 11:7), demonstrated through obedience. The ark as one-door salvation prefigures Christ. The covenant with Noah (Genesis 9:1-17) is universal, extending to ‘all flesh.’ This is the foundation for the biblical theme of common grace and sets the stage for the particular covenant with Abraham.
Connection to the Gospel
Noah’s ark saved those inside from judgment. Jesus is our ark — those who trust Him are saved from God’s judgment (1 Peter 3:20-21).
