Scripture: Genesis 4:1-16
Theme: God looks at the heart, not just the outside
Age Group: 4th-6th Grade (Ages 9-12)
Lesson Overview
The story of Cain and Abel is the first story of sibling rivalry and murder in Scripture. God accepted Abel’s offering because it was given in faith and with his best (Hebrews 11:4). Cain’s offering reflected a heart of obligation rather than worship. God gave Cain a gracious warning: ‘Sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it’ (Genesis 4:7). Cain ignored the warning and committed the first murder. This story reveals that God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). It also shows how quickly sin, if not dealt with, grows into horrific consequences. Hebrews 11:4 commends Abel’s faith. Cain’s line leads to increasing wickedness. The contrast sets up a theme throughout Scripture: those who approach God with faith versus those who approach with empty religion.
Connection to the Gospel
Cain’s anger led to murder. Jesus teaches that anger in the heart is sin (Matthew 5:21-22).
