To step onto the Eastern Plains of Colorado is to enter a world entirely distinct from the rocky, snow-capped peaks of the Front Range. This is Colorado, but not THAT Colorado. Out here along the I-70 corridor, just about 30 minutes from the Kansas border, the landscape opens up into a sea of shortgrass prairie, massive horizons, and immense skies. At what we consider to be the heart of this region in Kit Carson County sits Vona, the middle town in a string of tiny, interconnected sister communities like Seibert, Stratton, Bethune, Flagler, and the larger

county seat of Burlington. Life here moves to the rhythm of the weather, the harvest, and deep-rooted community ties. “Let’s wait and see how things look and feel, then we’ll decide what we are doing.”

Vona itself is a quiet, statutory town of fewer than 100 residents. Its main avenue features weather-worn, historic facades, and a wide asphalt road, the only one in a town of all dirt

roads and no stop light or stop signs. Massive agricultural combines and machinery parked in open spaces during the summer, and a calm stillness that is rare in modern America. The surrounding towns follow a similar blueprint, connected by a network of gridded, unpaved gravel

roads that slice through endless acres of dryland wheat, corn, and livestock pastures:
