The Pastor’s Role in Funerals

For a small church pastor, funerals are one of the most significant pastoral responsibilities. A funeral is not primarily a logistics event — it is a pastoral moment. The family is at their most vulnerable, and the pastor’s presence, words, and care matter deeply.

Before the Service: Pastoral Care

• Visit the family immediately — within 24 hours of the death if possible
• Listen before you speak — let the family tell you about their loved one
• Gather information for the service — name, life story, faith, family, and what they want the service to include
• Clarify logistics — date, time, location, burial or cremation, reception
• Pray with the family — before you leave

Planning the Service

A Simple Funeral Service Order

1. Prelude music (5-10 minutes)
2. Welcome and opening prayer (2-3 minutes)
3. Scripture reading (3-5 minutes)
4. Eulogy or tributes from family (10-15 minutes)
5. Message from the pastor (10-15 minutes)
6. Closing prayer (2-3 minutes)
7. Committal (at graveside, if applicable)

The Pastoral Message

The funeral message should:

• Honor the person who died — use their name, tell their story
• Comfort the grieving — acknowledge the pain honestly
• Point to the hope of the resurrection — this is the pastor’s unique contribution
• Be brief — 10-15 minutes is appropriate; this is not a Sunday sermon

After the Service: Follow-Up

• Visit the family again within a week
• Check in at one month and three months — grief does not end at the funeral
• Remember significant dates — the anniversary of the death, birthdays, holidays
• Connect the family to the congregation — grief is best walked through in community
