Jesus Is Tempted , Jesus Never Sinned

Scripture: Matthew 4:1-11

Theme: Jesus faced temptation but never sinned , He is the perfect Savior

Age Group: Nursery (Ages 0-2)

Overview

“Jesus Is Strong!” “God loves you so much, just like Jesus! Jesus faced tough things, but He never did wrong. Let’s remember: Jesus is the best friend who never sinned!” (Use soft voices, hands for “Jesus” or “strong,” and let toddlers wiggle like courage!) Optional reflection: children can draw a picture of Jesus helping their friends, then share one way they can help someone else this week. This extra activity supports the lesson’s theme and gives teachers a simple, lowprep option for extending the discussion.

Bible Story

Jesus’ First Day on Earth

God sent Jesus into the world, so He could help everyone. One day, Jesus fasted for forty days and nights. He didn’t eat anything, just water!

At the end, Jesus was very hungry. A devil (a scary spirit) came and said, “Eat this rock!” But Jesus said, “No, God will always take care of me.”

Next, the devil said, “Jump off the tall building!” But Jesus said, “I trust God!” God is my friend, and He will never let me fall.

Finally, the devil said, “I’ll make you king if you worship me.” But Jesus only worshipped God, the best God ever!

Why This Matters Jesus showed us how to trust God. Just like He never sinned, we can love God with all our hearts. God loves us so much, always!

Activities

Supplies:

  1. Prep: Give each child 1, 2 baby-safe rocks (or paper circles) to hold. Say, “Jesus held no bad things. He trusted God like us!”
  2. Read short: Read just the first sentence of Matthew 4:1, 2 (e.g., “Jesus was very hungry”).
  3. Pass & hold: Say, “Jesus loved God and others. Let’s pass our rocks, just like he shared love!” Pass rocks gently to friends.
  4. Repeat love: End with “Jesus never sinned. He trusted God always. Praise God!” ( Clap or rock your head like Jesus might have!)
  5. 2. “Crayon Clouds & Angel Wings” (Draw Love on Paper)
  6. Draw clouds: Give each child a piece of paper. Say, “God is like a cloud, big and safe. Jesus trusted God like us!”
  7. Fold wings: Fold paper in half, then cut 2 wings (adult does) and glue them to the cloud. “Jesus had wings of love!”
  8. Color God’s love: Let them color the cloud. Say, “Jesus didn’t want to sin. He trusted God always.”
  9. Read & repeat: Read “The Spirit led Jesus…” (Matthew 4:1) and have them hold up their clouds: “Jesus trusted God!” (Clap or wave wings!)

Discussion Questions

  1. Here are four simple, open-ended questions to help babies and toddlers explore Jesus’ story and God’s love:
  2. “What do you think Jesus did when he felt hungry?” (Pause for their response, then add:)
  3. “God loves us just like Jesus was loved! Can you tell me how God gives us love?”
  4. “Did Jesus eat the bread, or did he say no?” (Wait for their answer, then say:)
  5. “Just like Jesus, we can choose to trust God’s love, even when it’s hard!”
  6. “What color was the sky when Jesus was hungry?” (Let them guess, then add:)
  7. “God’s love is always with us, like the sun shines every day!”
  8. “If Jesus was afraid, how could he remember God’s love?” (Ask them to point to their heart or hug you first.)
  9. “You can always hug God’s love too, it’s like a big, warm hug!”
  10. (Encourage them to repeat: “God loves me!” or “I trust God!”)

Prayer Focus

“God loves us so much, just like Jesus loves you! Jesus was tempted, he didn’t sin. God is always with us, always good! Thank you, Jesus, for loving me so much!”

Missions Spotlight

Among the Bedouin peoples of the Middle East, who live in the same desert where Jesus was tempted, the story of temptation in the wilderness resonates deeply. Missionaries share that Jesus understands the harshness of the desert , and the harshness of temptation.

To the Cross

Satan tempted Jesus three times, and Jesus never sinned. Adam and Eve failed their test in the garden. Israel failed their tests in the wilderness. Jesus passed His test in the wilderness. Because He never sinned, His death on the cross could pay for OUR sins.

Family Take-Home

This Sunday school lesson teaches kids that Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness (Matthew 4) but never sinned because He trusted God’s love and strength. Just like Jesus, believers can face challenges, but like Him, we can rely on God’s power to stay strong and faithful.
