Scripture: Genesis 3:1-24
Theme: Sin separates us from God, but God provides a way back
Age Group: 4th-6th Grade (Ages 9-12)
Lesson Overview
Genesis 3 is the most tragic and most hopeful chapter in the Old Testament. The serpent’s strategy was simple: make Eve doubt God’s word. ‘Did God really say…?’ He made the forbidden fruit look desirable. Eve ate, Adam followed, and immediately their eyes were opened — not to wisdom, but to shame. They hid from God. Yet even in pronouncing judgment, God made a promise: one of Eve’s offspring would crush the serpent’s head (Genesis 3:15). This is the first Gospel promise — the protoevangelium. The whole rest of the Bible is the story of how God fulfills this promise through Jesus Christ.
Connection to the Gospel
The serpent crushed the heel of the woman’s offspring — Jesus — but Jesus crushed the serpent’s head on the cross (Hebrews 2:14).
