Church Stewardship Campaign for Small Churches
A simple, honest approach to annual giving campaigns. Free guide for small church pastors and boards.
Why Small Churches Need a Stewardship Campaign
A stewardship campaign is not a fundraising drive — it is an invitation to generosity. The goal is not to pressure people to give more. The goal is to help your congregation understand the connection between their giving and the ministry they care about, and to give them an opportunity to make a deliberate, prayerful commitment.
Most small churches that run a simple, honest stewardship campaign see giving increase 10-20% over the previous year.
The Simple 4-Week Campaign
Week 1: Vision
Preach on the ministry vision for the coming year. What is God calling this church to do? Be specific. Connect the vision to the congregation’s giving. “Here is what we believe God is calling us to do — and here is what it will take.”
Week 2: Impact
Share stories of ministry impact from the past year. Who was helped? What changed? Let the congregation see the fruit of their giving. Testimonies from members are more powerful than statistics.
Week 3: Invitation
Present the budget and invite commitment. Distribute pledge cards or direct people to online giving. Be honest about the need. Do not manipulate — invite. “We are asking you to prayerfully consider what God is calling you to give.”
Week 4: Celebration
Celebrate what God has done through the congregation’s generosity. Thank givers specifically and publicly (without amounts). Announce the results of the campaign. Close with prayer and gratitude.
What to Include in Your Campaign
- A clear budget presentation — show where the money goes, not just how much you need
- A simple pledge card or online giving option — make it easy to respond
- A personal ask from the pastor — the pastor’s own giving commitment matters
- A follow-up thank-you — within one week of the campaign close
What Not to Do
- Do not guilt or pressure — generosity that comes from obligation does not last
- Do not focus on the deficit — focus on the vision, not the gap
- Do not run the campaign in December — run it in October or November before year-end giving decisions are made
- Do not skip the follow-up — a thank-you note within one week dramatically increases retention
