Object Lessons on Identity and Worth

1. The Crumpled Dollar Bill (You Are Still Valuable)
Object: A dollar bill | Scripture: Luke 15:8-10
Hold up a crisp dollar bill. Ask: “How much is this worth?” ($1.) Now crumple it, step on it, fold it. Ask again: “How much is it worth now?” ($1 , it has not changed.) No matter what has happened to you, no matter how crumpled or stepped on you feel, your value has not changed. God searches for the lost coin not because it earned its value back but because it was always valuable to him.

2. The Mirror and the Window (Self-Focus vs. Others-Focus)
Object: A mirror and a window | Scripture: Philippians 2:3-4
Hold up the mirror. “What do you see?” (Yourself.) Hold up the window. “What do you see?” (The world outside.) A mirror and a window are both made of glass. The difference is the silver backing on the mirror. When we add silver (wealth, status, self-focus) to our lives, we stop seeing others and only see ourselves. Paul says to look not only to your own interests but also to the interests of others.

3. The Seed (Small Beginnings)
Object: A mustard seed | Scripture: Matthew 17:20
Show the tiny mustard seed. “This is one of the smallest seeds in the world. But it grows into a plant large enough for birds to nest in.” Jesus says faith like this seed can move mountains. God does not require great faith. He requires real faith , even the size of a mustard seed.

4. The Dirty Glove (Sin Spreads)
Object: A white glove and dirt | Scripture: Romans 3:23
Put on the white glove and touch the dirt. The dirt gets on the glove. Sin is like dirt , it spreads and affects everything it touches. No matter how carefully we try to avoid it, we all end up with dirty gloves. That is why we need someone to clean us from the outside in.

5. The Eraser (Forgiveness)
Object: An eraser and a whiteboard | Scripture: 1 John 1:9
Write a mistake on the whiteboard. “This represents something you have done wrong.” Erase it completely. “When we confess our sin to God, he erases it , not covers it up, not hides it, but removes it completely. The board is clean.”

6. The Bridge (Jesus Bridges the Gap)
Object: Two chairs and a board | Scripture: John 14:6
Place two chairs apart with a gap between them. “We are on one side. God is on the other. Sin created the gap.” Place the board across the gap. “Jesus is the bridge , the only way across.” Walk across the board. “That is what it means to trust Jesus.”

7. The Anchor (Hope in Jesus)
Object: An anchor or picture of one | Scripture: Hebrews 6:19
“When a storm comes, an anchor keeps a boat from drifting. It does not stop the storm. It keeps you from being swept away.” Jesus is our anchor , when life gets stormy, he keeps us from drifting. The anchor works even when you cannot see the bottom.

8. The Rescue Rope (The Gospel)
Object: A rope | Scripture: John 3:16
“Imagine you are drowning. Someone throws you a rope. The rope does not save you , grabbing the rope saves you. Jesus has thrown the rope. The question is whether you will grab it.” Connect to the Rescue Gospel framework.

9. The Compass (God’s Word as a Guide)
Object: A compass | Scripture: Psalm 119:105
“No matter which way you turn, the compass always points north. God’s Word is like a compass , it always points you in the right direction, no matter how confused you feel. The question is whether you are checking it.”

10. The Flashlight (Walking in the Light)
Object: A flashlight | Scripture: Psalm 119:105
Turn off the lights. Try to walk across the room. Turn on the flashlight. “God’s Word does not illuminate the whole path at once. It gives you enough light for the next step. That is all you need.”

11. The Salt (Being Salt in the World)
Object: Salt and bland food | Scripture: Matthew 5:13
Have students taste food without salt, then with salt. “Notice the difference. Salt does not call attention to itself , it enhances everything around it. Jesus calls his followers the salt of the earth. We are not supposed to be the main flavor. We are supposed to make everything around us better.”

12. The Vine and Branch (Staying Connected)
Object: A branch cut from a tree | Scripture: John 15:5
Show the cut branch. “What happens to a branch when it is cut from the tree?” (It withers and dies.) “Jesus says we are like branches , we need to stay connected to him to bear fruit. A branch that is not connected to the vine looks fine for a while. Then it starts to wither.”

13. The Yoke (Jesus’ Burden Is Light)
Object: A picture of a yoke | Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30
“A yoke is a heavy wooden frame that animals wear to pull loads. Jesus says his yoke is easy and his burden is light. He does not add to our load , he carries it with us. The question is whether we are trying to carry it alone.”

14. The Puzzle (We Need Each Other)
Object: A puzzle with one piece missing | Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:27
Show the puzzle with one piece missing. “The picture is not complete without every piece. The church is like a puzzle , every person matters, and the picture is not complete without you.”

15. The Phone (Prayer)
Object: A phone | Scripture: Philippians 4:6
“A phone lets you talk to someone who is not in the room with you. Prayer is like a phone call to God , you can talk to him anytime, anywhere, about anything. The difference is that God never lets it go to voicemail.”

16. The Broken Vase (Sin Breaks Things)
Object: A broken object | Scripture: Romans 6:23
“When something breaks, it does not work the way it was designed to. Sin breaks our relationship with God , it does not work the way God designed it. The good news is that God is in the business of restoration.”

17. The Thermometer (Spiritual Temperature)
Object: A thermometer | Scripture: Revelation 3:15-16
“A thermometer measures temperature. Jesus told a church he wished they were hot or cold , not lukewarm. What is your spiritual temperature right now? Hot (on fire for God), cold (honest about where you are), or lukewarm (going through the motions)?”

18. The Canteen (Spiritual Thirst)
Object: A water bottle | Scripture: John 4:14
“When you are thirsty, water satisfies you. But the thirst comes back. Jesus says he gives living water , whoever drinks it will never be thirsty again. What are you thirsty for that only Jesus can satisfy?”

19. The Treasure Box (The Kingdom of God)
Object: A box with something valuable inside | Scripture: Matthew 13:44
“Jesus says the kingdom of God is like a treasure hidden in a field , when someone finds it, they sell everything they have to buy that field. Is the kingdom of God worth everything to you? What would you give up for it?”

20. The Mirror (Honest Self-Assessment)
Object: A mirror | Scripture: James 1:22-25
“James says the person who hears the Word but does not do it is like someone who looks in a mirror and then immediately forgets what they look like. The Bible is a mirror , it shows you who you really are. The question is whether you walk away and forget, or whether you let what you see change you.”
