Speed Dating (the Friendly Kind)

Category: Getting to Know You | Group Size: 6–30 | Time: 15–20 minutes

How to Play

Students sit in two rows facing each other. Each round, they have 60–90 seconds to introduce themselves and answer a question. Then one row shifts down and they meet someone new.

  1. Set up two rows of chairs facing each other (equal numbers in each row).
  2. Give each round a question (see ideas below).
  3. Start the timer. Students talk to the person across from them.
  4. When time is up, one row shifts one seat to the right (the end person wraps around).
  5. Repeat for 5–8 rounds with different questions.

Question Ideas (start easy, go deeper)

  1. What is your favorite food?
  2. What is one thing on your bucket list?
  3. What is the best vacation you have ever taken?
  4. What is something most people do not know about you?
  5. Who is someone you really admire and why?
  6. What is one thing you are really good at?
  7. What is a goal you have for this year?
  8. What is one thing you are praying about right now?

Leader Tips

  • Start with light, fun questions. Save deeper ones for later rounds.
  • Use a phone timer with a fun sound to signal rotation.
  • For odd numbers, have one person be a “floater” each round or add a third row.
  • Debrief afterward: “What is something interesting you learned about someone today?”

Why It Works

This format ensures every student talks to multiple people they might not normally approach. The time limit keeps things moving and prevents awkward silences.

Scripture Connection

“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” — Proverbs 18:24 (ESV)

Real friendship takes intentional time. This game creates space for those first conversations.
