Summer camp is one of the most formative experiences in a young person’s faith journey. Research consistently shows that camp experiences produce lasting spiritual impact , not because of elaborate programming, but because of extended time in community, away from normal distractions, with focused attention on faith.
A small church camp with 12 students and 4 leaders can be more transformative than a large camp with 200 students and a professional staff. The small camp has something the large camp cannot replicate: every leader knows every student’s name, every conversation matters, and nobody gets lost in the crowd.
The theme is the spine of the camp. Everything else hangs on it. Choose it carefully, commit to it fully, and let it shape every element of the week.
How to Use These Themes
Each theme includes: a central Scripture, a one-sentence big idea, five daily topics (one per day of camp), and activity ideas. Adapt freely. The theme is a framework, not a script. The best camp moments are often unplanned , a conversation at the campfire, a student who opens up during a hike, a prayer that goes longer than expected because nobody wants to stop.
Theme 1: RESCUE , The Gospel as Rescue Story
Scripture: Luke 15 (the lost sheep, lost coin, lost son)
Big Idea: God is the rescuer. We are the rescued. Now we join the rescue.
Connection: Connects directly to the Rescue Gospel framework , Created, Broken, Rescued, Respond.
Daily Topics:
- Day 1: Lost , What does it mean to be separated from God? The parable of the lost sheep.
- Day 2: Found , The moment of rescue. What Jesus actually did and why it matters.
- Day 3: Rescued , What changes when you accept the rescue? New identity, new family.
- Day 4: Restored , The prodigal son comes home. What restoration looks like in real life.
- Day 5: Sent , The rescued become rescuers. Your mission field is where you already are.

Theme 2: ROOTED , Faith That Holds
Scripture: Colossians 2:6-7, Psalm 1
Big Idea: A tree that survives storms is one with deep roots. Faith that survives hard times is one rooted in Christ.
Daily Topics:

Theme 3: BRAVE , Courage in the Kingdom

Big Idea: Courage is not the absence of fear. It is doing the right thing in spite of fear.

- Day 3: Courage in relationships , Having hard conversations, forgiving people who hurt you.

Theme 4: KNOWN , You Are Seen by God
Scripture: Psalm 139, John 10:3
Big Idea: God knows you completely and loves you completely. That changes everything.
Daily Topics:

Big Idea: You are not waiting to be sent. You are already sent , to your school, your neighborhood, your family.
Daily Topics:

Big Idea: God can handle your honesty. The Psalms model what it looks like to bring your real self to God.

Big Idea: You are made in the image of God. That is enough. You do not need to perform, compare, or prove.

Theme 9: LIGHT , Being Light in Dark Places

Big Idea: Jesus is the light of the world. His followers carry that light into dark places.

Theme 10: WILDERNESS , Faith in Hard Seasons
Scripture: Exodus 16, Matthew 4:1-11
Big Idea: The wilderness is not a detour from God’s plan. It is often the place where faith is formed.
Daily Topics:

Planning Your Small Church Camp
A small church camp does not need a large budget, a professional speaker, or a fancy venue. It needs a clear theme, a simple schedule, genuine community, and space for God to work.
Sample 24-hour schedule:
- Friday 5pm: Arrive, unpack, settle in
- Friday 6pm: Dinner together
- Friday 7pm: Session 1 , Opening session, introduce the theme
- Friday 8:30pm: Small group discussion
