Church Social Media for Small Churches

What to post, how often, and how to build an online presence that actually serves your congregation and community.

By Brent Lacy

Most small churches approach social media one of two ways.

They either ignore it entirely, no Facebook page, no website, no online presence, and wonder why visitors cannot find them. Or they create accounts on every platform, post sporadically for a few months, and then abandon them when it feels like shouting into a void.

Neither approach serves the congregation or the community. Here is a practical guide to church social media that actually works for small churches.

3-4x
per week is the right posting frequency for a small church Facebook page

platform done well beats 5 platforms done poorly

Choose One Platform and Do It Well

For most small and rural churches, that platform is Facebook.

Your congregation is on Facebook. Your community is on Facebook. Facebook allows you to reach people who are not already following you through shares and local community groups. And Facebook is free.

Do not spread yourself across Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook simultaneously. Pick one and do it consistently. Consistency matters more than platform diversity.

What to Post

The most effective church social media content falls into five categories.

1. Service information (1-2x per week)

Service times, location, and what to expect. This is the most searched-for information about your church. Post it regularly, not just when you remember.

2. Ministry highlights (1x per week)

Photos from events, VBS, community meals, service projects. Real photos of real people doing real ministry. Not stock photos. Not graphics. Real moments from your church’s life.

3. Scripture and encouragement (2-3x per week)

A verse with a brief reflection. A quote from Sunday’s sermon. A word of encouragement for the week. This content is easy to create and consistently performs well.

4. Community engagement (1x per week)

Sharing local news, celebrating community events, acknowledging local heroes. This positions your church as a community member, not just a religious organization.

5. Prayer requests and updates (as needed)

Asking for prayer for congregation members (with permission) and sharing answered prayers. This builds community and demonstrates that the church is a genuine community of care.

What Not to Post

  • Political content. This divides your congregation and alienates your community.
  • Theological debates. Social media is not the place for nuanced theological discussion.
  • Confidential pastoral care information. Never share personal struggles or prayer requests without explicit permission.
  • Low-quality photos. A blurry photo of an empty room communicates that the church does not care about quality.
  • Excessive self-promotion. Every post should serve the reader, not just promote the church.

A Simple Weekly Posting Schedule

  • Monday: A reflection on Sunday’s sermon or a verse from the passage.
  • Wednesday: A ministry highlight, event announcement, or community engagement post.
  • Friday: Service time reminder and a word of encouragement for the weekend.
  • Sunday: A photo from the service or a quote from the sermon (posted after the service).
Practical Tip: Assign social media to one person, not the pastor. The pastor provides the content (sermon quotes, ministry updates, prayer requests). The volunteer posts it. This separates content creation from content distribution and prevents the pastor from spending time on social media management.

Responding to Comments and Messages

Social media is a two-way medium. Respond to comments and messages promptly, within 24 hours at most. A church that does not respond to messages communicates that it does not care about the people trying to reach it.

Assign someone to monitor the church’s social media accounts and respond to messages. This does not have to be the pastor.
