Small Church Statistics 2025-2026
Data on attendance, bi-vocational ministry, giving, and rural church demographics. Updated annually.
By Brent Lacy
Most ministry statistics are reported in ways that make large churches look like the norm. They are not. Here is what the data actually shows about the American church landscape.
This page compiles key statistics from the most reliable sources available: the National Congregations Study, Lifeway Research, Pew Research Center, Barna Group, and Faith Communities Today. Sources are cited for every statistic.

What These Numbers Mean
The median congregation in America has 65 people on Sunday morning. That means half of all churches are smaller than 65. The average (mean) is much higher because a small number of very large churches pull the number up. When ministry resources, conferences, and books are built for the “average” church, they are actually built for a church that most pastors will never lead.
Primary Source: National Congregations Study (NCS), conducted by Duke University. The NCS is the most comprehensive ongoing study of American religious congregations. The 2025 wave surveyed a nationally representative sample of congregations across all faith traditions.

Bi-Vocational Ministry Is the Norm, Not the Exception
Nearly half of all evangelical pastors in America work a secular job in addition to their ministry role. In rural areas, that percentage is even higher. The bi-vocational pastor is not a transitional figure waiting for a full-time call. For millions of churches, bi-vocational ministry is the permanent model.
