This will prevent a lot of surprises and possibly hurt feelings later.

Buying a website is like buying a software program. Unless you shell out the big bucks to be able to do whatever you want to it, you’re simply purchasing a license to use it as outlined by the contract.

As a designer, it is easier for me to retain copyright in order to use what I design as part of my portfolio. It is set in a prominent area of the contract. However, as with any contract, sometimes clients choose not to read before signing. But I can always refer them to the contract…

As a Web Developer, I get to take part in some interesting projects.

MinistryPlace.Net and the rest of the BrentLacy.com properties are based in Parke County, Indiana. It is a rural county of 18,000 people, about 60 miles west of Indianapolis, Indiana. we have fields, farms, Amish communities, and most notably Covered Bridges, 30-plus of them that are celebrated every October at the Covered Bridge Festival.

Parke County is developing. But that development is centering around the local small business. The idea for ParkeCountyOnline.com came from discussions with a few local businesspeople that want to continue the trend of enhancing the life of small business in our county. They really liked the idea of making a place that can provide web and social media presence for small businesses that may not otherwise have presence or be able to afford a presence. This can help create an ideal environment for small startups to thrive. We had to keep it quality, yet affordable.

I also work full-time as a Youth Pastor, so one of the key components for me was to engage the local churches and remind them that they are a part of the community at large in Parke County. They can also use the site as a way to get their information such as locations, events, and service times back into the public square. Everyone wins in this scenario.

This is going to be a fun project.

Check it out here….

I think churches at least now know that they need a website, which is often the new front door to the community. (Our research shows that 27% of people who have been at a church under a year found the church first online.) Sadly, I think too many churches just look for any old website, or do a feature comparison to check the ‘we’ve got a website’ box.

Hackers from Indonesia broke into my FTP server and changed files around on most of the websites I host. Bummer.

I first thought it was an SQL Database Injection break-in. I was pleasantly surprised to find only one file had been changed in each folder. It could have been so much worse. I thought I was going to have an extremely long night.

I am still picking up the pieces, but here are a few basic tips to pass on from my experience:

1. Use secure passwords. The name of your favorite cat is no longer an option. if it is in the dictionary, it was not a safe password 15 years ago, let alone today. Numbers, letters, and non alpha-numeric characters. Passwords changed frequently.

2.Make sure your plugins and addons are up to date. If you don’t, it’s like a padlock on a screen door.

3. Keep your backups up-to-date. Jesus saves, so should you.

Southridge Church
(southridgechurch.ca)

*What They Did Well*:

- Good use of whitespace on homepage
- Good color scheme
- Very easy navigation
- Easy to find service times
- The image rotator is not overwhelming
- Good placement of events calendar
- You get a sense of the mission of the church
almost immediately
- The focus on family shines through

*What could possibly improve:*

- The default text size is small on widescreen displays.
- The the use of whitespace on the rest of the pages.
- The effect of the Shortcuts Link is “interesting...”
