How do you respond to Joplin, MO?

We’ve seen the pictures, we know the stories, but how do we respond as a community of believers?

What is your Church/Ministry doing to support the efforts?

I cannot imagine the devastation they have there. I cannot imagine what it is like to live there, or to lose someone in this tragedy. Red Cross is doing an amazing job coordinating efforts, from the reports I hear. The Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief Team (“the yellowshirts”) are doing much in the community as well. As a Pastor in a SBC church, I can can highly recommend supporting them. They have been instrumental in many recent tragedies.

I have not read the newest Rob Bell book. I have read a few people’s opinions and or reviews. I was doing well with my promise until Mark Driscoll weighed in on the controversy. I don’t know him personally, only antics I have read or been told about, or things put on the Mars Hill website. Will the Real Holy Spirit Please Show Up?

For those that missed it, this week on SNL featured Mark Zuckerburg in the opening monologue. Mark is the co-founder and CEO of Facebook. What made it interesting was the fact that he was not the host. The guy who played him on a “fictional movie” “that was not about him” was the host. You also had a SNL cast member impersonating him thrown into the mix. Awkward is an accurate depiction.

I watched the above clip and it made me think. Are we doing that same thing in our churches? Are we misrepresenting the Biblical depiction of the Holy Spirit with some poor imitations? Are we content to attribute to The Holy Spirit the roles and characteristics that keep us comfortable and happy? But we leave out the parts that make us uncomfortable.

Are we familiar enough with The Holy Spirit to realize when He shows up? Have we been fooled by a poor imitation taking His role?

Chew on that this week. I will.

What are you doing?

Earlier this evening, I posed this question on facebook and twitter “what did you do today that meant squat in the scope of eternity?”

I had limited effect today in the office, but I enjoyed the opportunity to go help assemble Bibles that are going to be distributed to US troops deployed abroad. I pray they make a huge impact.

I got widely varied responses to the above question, but the best by far was from @htcclay who posted in reply posted ” I shared the Gospel with a coworker”.

That’s what we need to be doing. Now go do it!

Insure Your Marriage?

I thought a Pre-Nup was kind of a chicken-livered approach to marriage, but this takes that idea of non-committed commitments to a new low! A firm now sells divorce insurance that pays out if your marriage fails. Is this going to become a cultural norm? I sure hope not..
