NY Times and Cnet have both recently run stories on a new site called ChatRoulette.com (lack of link intentional). I applaud both for their warning parents of this site. The premise of the site is this: you connect via webcam with random people from all over the globe for chatting. The downside: there is no way of knowing who you are connecting with or what will be onscreen when you connect.
The articles have better description and review, but I have to echo some of the practical tips for youth ministers and parents.
- As an IT professional, I cannot stress enough that there is no substitute for direct supervision! Software/Hardware solutions are great portions of the solution, but they are not the solution.
- As a youth pastor, I cannot stress enough the importance of conversation. Clearly set your child’s boundaries. However, don’t let the conversation stop there.
- As a parent, I cannot stress the importance of being informed. We cannot live an existence of blissful ignorance, our kids are far too important.
